Steering Rack Wear

Post by Dubstar »

I've notice a little play in my rack, namely on the offside where I can pull the arm in and out of the rack, by about a couple of mm. Can you buy a new arm or the "balljoint" it goes into or is it a new rack job? I ask because I'm sure you can get these for other cars, Ford Sierra for one, or can you shim them out? LHD manual rack by the way.

You can buy just the arm, cost about £20 IIRC from GSF ... comes with a track rod end too ... just remember to measure the old one carefully to get your tracking right

Tracking will need checking and resetting regardless of how accurate you think you may have measured the old compared to the new.

Swapping a rack is very simple.

Ok, less money is what I meant. I put Baxters steering bushes in, so the rack was actually out recently apart from disconnecting the track rod ends. Just thought the arm may be cheaper and (slighlty)less work.
