sliding door lock, please take a peep........

Post by lhd »

Since purchasing my 1983 lhd the sliding door can only be opened whilst turning the key, and can not be left unlocked. :(
After hours of fiddling, not in my pocket but with the mech. I decided to find a replacement, which Andyvan duely provided.
Now the problem I am having is that the replacement mech is doing exactly the same thing,Which brings me to my question. Can the front mech's operation be hampered by the rear mech, as they seem to be conected with a cable.
Please help if you can as this has been an ongoing problem now for over 18 month's, and boy is it getting on my (.)(.)'s.
forever your slave (excludes sexual) to anyone who can help me out...
thanks lhd............................... :ok

But what thing is it doing? Is it springing back into locked or does it never quite come out of locked but gets marginal enough to pull the handle? What about using the latch on the inside? What does that do?

If you suspect the rear mech then disconnect it, it's one less thing to worry about at least for the porpoise of diagnosis.

Hi there and thanks for replying,
The thing it is (not) doing, is staying unlocked .
the latch on the inside just stays down. if you lift it up then you can open the door from the inside, but it just drops back down into what I think is the locked position (not sure if thats right). Should you be able to lift the latch and it stay there.
thanks

Yes you should be able to lift the little latch and it should stay there.

I thought that the chances of having the same problem with two mech's would be unlikely, but the latch falls down on both of the mechs. Also, if the cable has no tension then the latch will not move at all.

it's just the lock end worn, mine did this, everytime you shut the door it dropped down, nothing to do with the other end...

is the problem, that when you shut the slide door, the catch inside falls down again to lock it??? (have a look through the pass door) or is it more indepth?
if it does fall down, can you then undo it from the inside with said knob, and then open the door from outside/inside??
