squeeeeeeky!!!

Hi everyone, recentely i noticed a squeek noise coming from somwhere in the front of my van, after much searching i finally narrowed it down th the front strut top mount on the near side, i didnt really bother me at 1st but now the squeek is doin my head in, after inspecting the ruuber mount at the top of the strut i could see that it was split, hence the squeeking, so i thought ok i'll just get another one and replace it, WRONG!! I can't find one anywhere, i 1st checked on vagcat where i could see the part i need on the diagram but no number against it so i phoned vw and they dont list one

so then i went to just kampers and they list every bush but the one i need AAAAAGGGHHHHH!! Any help on this would be awesome

The squeaking comes from these anyway and its flippin annoying!

Try spraying some silicone grease into the bush, it may help. Theres one on each side of the upper suspension arm by the way.

Looks like it might be the one, does this fit verticaly inside the the arm at the top of the strut? the one that is split on mine can't really be seen unless the spring is removed.

No, there's two of these that fit either side of the upper suspension arm or wishbone, (one on each side, that is!). They are a bit of a pain to replace as they have three spot welds which must be ground off before removing the old ones and then have to be spot welded again when the new ones go in.
I know the part you mean but the squeaking isn't coming from there!
The part you are referring to I believe, is a bump stop and that is vertical inside the front spring. The bushes I have mentioned are horizontal at the top rear of the upper suspension arm on either side.
If you do decide to replace these, they are held in place by a spindle that runs right through from one side to the other and moving this will alter the steering geometry, so will have to be realigned.
Be aware though, these will quite often squeak without having anything wrong with them... They just squeak!

I can vouch for that. Both sides of ours were squeaking like a whole family of hungry mice, and had been for months, so we just gave it a liberal blast of WD40 which cured it. Passed the MOT last week no probs, much to the surprise of the gawkers who were quite obviously pointing and laughing at the state of the rust and various holes (caused by rust) on my van. You'd have been hard pushed to see someone with a smugger smile on their gub than I had that day I can tell you.

One of the reasons these bushes squeak is because of lack of lubrication when fitted or replaced.
If renewing, copperslip everything that could bind. And when torquing up eccentric rod and bolt be certain wheels are back on ground. Tightening with wheels still raised causes excessive binding and squealing.

No amount of spraying stuff on has made any real difference

Be careful about spraying stuff on them, some stuff (WD40 ?) is not good for rubber.

We did get a brief cure by painting them with car shampoo (soap but without the loads of harmful salt that is in normal liquid soaps)

Looks like replacement ( around £120 iirc ) at your T25 friendly garage is the only real cure.

Remember the bolts there set the steering / suspension geometry and you need to know what you are doing if you don't want to upset that !!

When I bought my camper it squeaked!...

I lubricated everything in sight it still sqeaked!...

The garage looked at it and checked and lubed everthing in sight it continued squeaking!...

I looked back at all the bills / paper work I got with it...it was squeaking in 1989!...

All bushes etc were changed in 1990 by desperate previous owner... it continued squeaking!...

I love it squeaking!!!! if it stopped I would know something was wrong!!

Now the front seats squeak too... it's getting quite orchestral!

Fridge does not squeak....

I would be well fed up if I paid for all the bushes to be done to stop it squeaking and it still did it !!

Gill says she doesn't mind the squeaking, gives it character she says !

I hate it !!

When I fixed it (just for a day or 2

) it felt sooo much nicer to drive, it really did !! Transforms the driving experience from sounding like an old Camper on it's last legs to a smooth well maintained vehicle.

Just as soon as I can afford it, I will be paying someone to FIX IT (ie not TRY TO FIX IT

)

Changed them all in 1990! that's 18 years ago! you are lucky to get 6-7 years out of a set of these things as they have always been a weakness in the suspension design of a T25.
I can remember changing them on 2-3 year old vans back in the mid 80's
If the bolt end is noticeabling off center to the bush then they need changing...simple as that!

SORTED!!

One can of silicon spray- £3.99 covered the mulitude of rubber bushes and no squeaks, as sad as it is though i kinda miss it!
