Mile/Kilo meter

Post by Dartmoor »

On my Westfalia, the kilometer recorder seems only to work sporadically. One day it works, the next day not? Not too worried as my insurance is based on a mileage limit - and they need a reading every year. So if the thing stops working every other day, well hey, I can drive it more! But on the other hand, what is the likely fault, and how easily can I fix it?

Start with checking the inner drive cable to see if it is still located in the N/S/F grease cap with its 'E' clip, and while you are there give the whole cable a nice coat of fresh grease, but by the sound of things it may be too late to rescue the situation.

Simplest fix would be either a new speedo cable , but if that is working fine the speedo head may have had enough.

Thanks for that. The strange thing is that speedo works fine - I can always see that working - its just the recorder that's dicey.

Most likely that one of the small cogs that drives the odometer has spli/become loose on its shaft. If it still works sometimes then a bit of glue should fix it.
It'll all need taking apart though. Not too difficult just a bit fiddley and you'll need to be methodical.
