Drive train noise
My syncro 16" has started making a noise that sounds like straight cut gears meshing when I let my foot of the accelerator or under braking, changes gear fine and they never pop out.
Any ideas what it might be?
I know one of the outer rear cv boots is split so I'm kinda hopeing its that...
of maybe a wheel bearing.
I've not got round to dropping the prop yet but I'll try and do that to eliminate the front dif from the equation.
Just asking incase anyone has had a similar sounding problem Ideas oof what to look for would be nice

A call to Aidan might be in order...
you'll get sound honest advice
But if its making a "whine" and suddenly started doing it... then you really should stop driving.... it wont take long for it to really mess things up and then lots of parts in the box will be buggered....... bearing and gears dont like fragments of other bearings passing through them....

A whine? Yes? whines on accel, quiet on light/no load whine off the power...?
Main bearing worn.. allowing pinion to climb the ring gear.. same as mine was doing.. when opened the main bearing surface was starting to scuff up and wear away.. luckily the bits and wear wasnt bad and nothing else got damaged... the tolerances in the box are very tight, once things start moving it isnt long before irrepairable damage takes place ...
Silly thing, have you checked the oil level???

Actually no
, not checked the gearbox oil, (changed the front diff oil) have got some v expensive redline oil waiting to go in as I was planning an oil change, but it looks like the safest bet is to take the box out and get it sent of to Aidan.
Good time to strip and repack all the cv's

Speak to Aidan about "the great redline debate"
Personally I would go get some reasonable quality GL4 oil and try that first... I know personally of at least 2 boxes that have had redline put in then broke in 4k miles.... and heard of others too... coincidence?? poss... but there are a couple of theorys about it....

That's a wallet-emptying sound...

Dry and a fair bit of transmission shuttling on a neutral throttle with it?
There's Redline MTL and then there's Redline MT90, latter is the one, keep it till later...

Got the boxes back from Aidan, along with all the old parts he replaced, looking at this it's fairly clear stopping driving and getting them rebuilt was the right course of action!
No doubt things would have been a lot worse if this had let go.
Busy weekend ahead now
