High or pop

Hi all.
I have a camper(t25 1981) which in the past had some damage to the pop top roof, an insurance company paid for a permanent one to be fitted(like a fixed box on top that doesn't go down) and i hate it! I'm going to fix one. What are the advantages and disadvantages of a high top and pop top and what would people suggest. I'm presuming either can be fitted although it origionally had a pop top.

Well my first three homebuilts had my own design of elevating roof and I have to say I like the idea of keeping the frontal area down. However we are touring types in that we rarely stay in one place for more than a day or so. Her indoors used to get the hump as I had to be asked to put the roof up even when we sopped for a cuppa. Also on the everything but the kitchen sink principle a lot of moving stuff around was involved every stopover. So we plumped for a fixed high top this time. As there are just the two of us we did away with the top bunk and and put a cupboard at the front for utensils etc. and a net at the back for bedding etc. This way we just walk through and get on with it with the only faffing being activating the R & R bed and lifting down the bedding. For us this is just about perfect.

Hi Matcap,

I know everyone will have a different opinion on this, but speaking from the point of view of someone who's only ever had a pop top, what we've found are the following:

Good?
1) In some council owned garages, you can get the van in them. So benefit of a bit more security maybe?, weather protection etc.

2) Goes more easily under some car park barriers too!

Bad?
1) Sometimes you can drive off and forget you've left the roof up! - well we did once!

Suppose it depends what your needs are though at end of the day?!

IMHO pop tops rule.

High tops are good for:
Covert camping
Permanent storage
Hanging surf boards to the side of

I've stated my opinion many times before on this - im sure a search will help
