red flashing light

Post by munnyella »

Hi folks

I have a red flashing light in the middle of my water temp guage.

I can't remember what it indicates, temp and level are fine, it is the one that usually flashes a bit on start up, the stops, but now it doesn't, well it does after I drive over a pothole/speedbump.

It is on my scirocco, but i'm pretty sure it is a VW generic guage and that they mostly all indicate the same thing.

The car has been laid up for 3 months, I'm thinking that a switch/sensor is sticking a bit, but which one?

Any thoughts ??

Cheers

The flashing light is, as you said, an indicator of coolant level and over temperature.
IF you have checked these, then the most likely cause is an electrical fault.

check the wiring to the sender, if it exists, on the header tank.
or check the wiring behind the dashboard.

I have just had a look at the expansion tank, there is a level sensor in the top of it, disconnecting the wires does nothing so I assume it is a `push to break' type float switch.

I shall whip it out tomorrow and give it a jiggle, (the sensor that is!)

Most of the coolant had leaked out whilst it was layed up aswell, I have a lot of white deposits on nearly every hose joint, so I shan't be surprised to find it a bit `dried out'

I shall let you know how I get on.
