Decided to change the oil and filter today, not hard to do as have done it many times before on numerous engines.......but certainly paid to check wiki and other threads. I found that last time it was done the copper "O" ring was omitted which made removal of the sump plug very hard, it was done up murder tight, taper of the plug to the taper of the sump plug hole and can see how it makes a MUST on the use of a copper ring. Also in numerous threads on the oil change method it mentions filler neck extension tube, no pics so took one and here it is, in case anyone not knowing of it can see where it is. and perhaps it could be added to a wiki article for reference?

I have recently carried out an oil change ( the sump plug was knackered as well) see sump plug blues
I found that even with the extension tube pulled, the container the oil came in would still not pour down the tube, (i have no funnel) but luckily I had an old Tesco's Hi-Juice Bottle i washed it throughlly cut the bottom out and it fitted perfetly into the oil filler tube.

5 litre can of oil on its side with the hole at the top, pour slowly, rotating tha can as the oil goes in and down.

i dont think the tapered sump plugs have a washer. i think the ones that have a washer have a flat face for it to seal against. someone will be along shortly who knows i'm sure.

Or a funnel with a flexible neck from the £1 shop makes things nice and easy (or an oil jug with a flexible spout from ebay, if you really want to push the boat out!)

Tapered plugs I have come across in the past have had a washer of plastic / neoprene, some with compresable copper ring like on a spark plug. The one I got from GSF was flat washer, it should compress to shape of plug, I don't seem to have any leakage so assume OK unless wisdom of others say it is not needed with a tapered , but wondered if it may have been modified / helicoiled in the past? Flexible funnels also available from tesco for a quid, got 2 the other day, one for water and other for oil, TIP keep oil funnel in plastic bag and seal it so it gathers no muck.

I use an old water bottle with the end chopped off as a funnel
always have a few of these in the van
I have one of those small bottles of oil in mine, and I just transfer some oil from the big container into the little one. The sort you can buy from Asda for about £1.50 with what is supposed to be engine oil but is more like olive oil. Works for me and you don't have to carry messy funnels or 5 ltr cans of oil. Unless you're going on a long journey, but mines a daily driver so it suits me.
