Tuning 2.1 Wasserboxer

Post by Pickles »

I am wanting more power from my current 2.1 DJ Engine
I like the engine do not want to change to Suburu, Porsche or other
Anybody got any ideas. I don't want to spend the earth and will be doing the work myself.
Will have to run on LPG, currently does
Looking for 150hp
The options I have considered are

1. Supercharge the 2.1 using a eaton (mini) supercharger off e-bay
Has anybody done this already
Needs lower compression What? What pistons to use.
What throttle body to use
Will have to run on petrol occasionally, get me home. on the current
injection system.

2. Turbo charge 2.1
Has been done commercially
150 hp in SA and Germany
Anybody any details turbo etc
I know there is a turbo wasserboxer bug racing out there.
Also there was a 2.1 turbo t25 at the pod once what happened to it
anybody any details.

3. Increase capacity
I know BAS in germany used to sell stroker cranks
and larger capacity barrels and pistons
Go West in th US do stroked motors
http://www.gowesty.com/new_engine.htm
Anyone done one in the UK
Any one in the UK that can weld and offset grind a crank.

4. Increase capacity plus forced induction

Abandon hope all ye who enter here, surely.

The DJ was going well at 112bhp, don't encourage it into an early grave, unless you've spent the R&D.

I've spoken to GoWesty on several occasions about their 2.4 - it sounds like a good and very 'stealth' solution. They've never exported one of these increased capacity engines to Europe, but did give me a quote on parts to get one built.

If I were to get one built I'd use Raceshack in Tewkesbury - having seen their facilities and heard a lot about their expertise I doubt you'd get a better built engine in the UK.

Steve's Auto Clinic in South Africa claimed 150 bhp for their 2.1 DJ Stage 3 conversion (late 90's) which was ported heads, free flow exhaust and modifications to the AFM and temp2 sender.
I obtained a SA 'velle with this engine last year and it did pull very nicely. Unfortunately a plug sheared when I tried to service it and I ended up pulling the engine and fitting a new VAG one, with the SAC free flow exhaust, but with standard AFM and temp2, but fitted a K&N airfilter instead of the original dusty conditions one and it is very nice, very free reving and pulls well. I'd like to get it on a rolling road and see what it actually produces now, and could also check to see what difference the air filter makes. Also be interesting to see what difference there is in practice between a DJ timed for unleaded and an MV.
I've had the ported head engine rebuilt but really can't face swapping them over now so that is ready to go into something else together with the modded AFM (and the temp 2 sender mod can be easily done)
The exhaust may be worth having copied in this country if it is proven to help produce more power.

Improving the 2.1 DJ engine

Post by trundletruc »

I don't want to go any faster! I just want it to do more miles to the gallon and last longer.

Who is the best person to talk to about how I rebuild my engine?
Are there any books about rebuilding the VW wasserboxer engine other than Haynes etc.?

Can you put stainless steel cylinder heads studs in it? and if yes where do you get them from?

Can the Didijet box be modified to improve economy? Are there different air flow meters and which is the best?

If the older style of exhaust system with pipes coming straight back to the silencer was fitted, is there any improvement?

Such a lot of questions! but rather than put in a TDI,GTI of Subaru, surely something can be done with the standard engine after all with a bit of TLC and tweeking most engines can be improved.

Older stylee exhaust = -10% power - bad idea.

GoWesty are about the only people who've spent the time and money on getting more reliable grunt out of the WBX unit.... better go GTI or Scooby rather than deal with those prices, unless you fancy the 40,000mile warrantee (which IS tempting!)

Have you got any data on it from SA, DYNO RESULTS ETC who was it made by.
What are the mods to the AFM and the temp 2 sender.
Come on spill the beans.

What are the prices for parts from Go westy
the new 2.5 conversion sounds nice.
Any one now if the existing 2.1 crank can be offset ground to increase the stroke and use different rods.
