Why Gti my joker or not!

Post by waltraud »

Hi- currently 1.9dg poptop. I'm looking for (under £1500)potential engine upgrade & thinking in order:
cost of conversion, then mpg, then insurance, reliability, breakdown ease of repair.
1.8-2ltr Gti seems sensible & not too complex, but why apparently not too popular?? Would gearing & torque be an issue (4spd manual) with likely single webber carb. I would ideally collect parts then do the lions share of engine out & new one in over two days.!sounds easy to just write it down.......thx. Tim

I've fitted a 1.8GTi on a 4sp, use to have a 1.9WBX. Been running it for 2 years. The GTi is V reliable, torque is no issue for my bus as it isn't heavy. Gearing is fine.
If you're going to do it keep the injection.
