What diesel engine?

Post by scott b »

Hi all. I'm new to this so be gentle with me  . I just bought my first van. It has a 1.6 turbo diesel fitted, i was told this came out of a golf?
I'm thinking of swapping to a 1.9 td. I have read the top post (FAQ thing) but everyone refers to engines by the codes. I have no idea what an AAZ is. Can anyone tell me what engine I need and out of what car etc. Any help or further info greatly appreciated. :D

Thanks. Scott

If the engine has been fitted out of a Golf, does it have the T25 dipstick in it?

If not then it may be that the engine has been over-filled with oil and is actually just fine, but you need to drop oil and refill with 4.5litres and check where it comes on the existing dipstick.

If it's not fine after this then you may need to consider replacing the unit.

I would NOT recommend using a K&N cone filter on a TD though

Yes, any restriction in the inlet will stress the turbo gland seals on the compressor side and you don't want them going, hence the large filter normally fitted.
As Thom says you really should have a good look to see where the oil is coming from, another place to look is the breather hose on the cambox, make sure it hasn't come off and the ol separator is all connected up properly there - that can make a mess, esp. if engine is overfilled.... so you have some good advice up above... look also to see if the intake hoses in turbo area are covered in oil.

You should alos try to establish whether this is an original 1.6 Turbo diesel or what the suggestion about the golf is, was it once a petrol - indicates conversion might need tidying up or not done with all the right parts - find local clubber with a 1.6TD to take a quick look?

Odd, other AAZ conversions seem to find room for a proper airbox... must be just you.

I've run a K&N for years, but mine is the replacement element that fits the standard JX airbox.
I've never had any problems with it.
Those cone filters are noisey though.
There is plenty of room to put a JX airbox behind the left hand rear light with a AAZ conversion, not having looked in your engine bay but I should imagine yours is the same.

Thanks for the reply guys. My van was originally a 1.6 petrol and had the diesel fitted a few months ago. Had a quick look at it and it appears to be coming from the dipstick. :D

You should give Central VW/Audi a call, they're on the Wirral - they might be able to help you.

As Russells has said - check out what pump you have. As for non turbos units - they usually fit with less hassle than a turbo unit, mine was a 1.9n/a out a Cordoba/Toledo.
