Hello,
Any advice on taking off the water pump on a dg engine?
I took the water pump off my spare engine in the cellar and that was a bit of a struggle... had to take off the engine pulley to extract it.
Now I'm looking at the one on the van and it looks like I'm going to have to take off the exhaust and the pulley to get the bugg*r off!
Surely that can't be right?
Dave.

early or late ? the design of the attatchments is different, late is easier, but basically you disconnect the pipes attatched to the pump, and remove the pump pulley (three little m8 bolts) and you can then access the three bolts that hold the pump to the block. The allen head bolts that should attach the pipes to the pump go horrible though, good allen key socket 6mm iirc, and a small screwdriver to remove crud from bolt heads are usually required. 3/8" driver usually small enough to get in there and big enough to undo them, 1/4" driver may be too small.
You should not have to disturb the exhaust or its shield.
Be prepared for coolant spillage as it says in the manual : )
Oh and plusgas is always good

I had to change the water pump on my 1990 1.9dg, i didnt need to remove the pulley, if you undo both ends of the metal pipe that runs from the pump and behind the pulley then you should, with a little bit of wiggling, be able to get the pump off ok. The allen key did need shortening tho.

Well, the bolts holding the thermostat housing to the water pump sheared off so I had to take the lot off in one.
I took the crankshaft pulley off which made everything much easier (one of the allen sockets was knakered so I couldn't free that pipe without resort to my welder, figured the crank pulley was less to carry from the cellar, tools wise
).
No need to disturb the exhaust, Phew.
It's all back on now, just got to refill and bleed tomorrow, and pray for no leaks.....
Ta for the advice
Dave.
