starting a diesel that's been standing 3 years?

Just picked up a 1988 1.6 Jetta diesel as a hopeful replacement
for my friends t25, does it need the t25s sump putting on it, &
is there any way the gear box can be used with it?
do you think it's a powerful enough engine for a t25?

also

is there anything i should do before i try & start it??
apart from fresh fuel that is..

drain the water off the fuel filter, and check the glow plugs are working properly

You need to read the wiki dude....

Is the jetta a turbo diesel? Is the t3 a turbo?

itll need timing belt kit,water pump,drive belts,rocker cover gasket,oil-filters,cj.
bought some real off roaders!!!!!!!

i can't find anything i the wikki that says wether or not i can easily
use the engine & box in a t3 :P

it doesn't want to start, it's trying, trying & then trying harder but
you have to stop at some point to save your starter motor :(
batteries on charge again, maybe we'll have some luck later,.

The engine will mate to a diesel T3 gearbox only (petrols can be adapted with diesel parts). Rear engined gearboxes are completely different to front engined ones in about every way imagineable so send the jetta gearbox to the scrappy with the other needless bits of jetta - helps keep the weight up for the weighbridge.

If it sounds like its thinking about starting it could be pump timeing out slightly - are you useing the cold start leaver? Should help. Could also be degraded injectors not spraying right. If its more sereously out of time you shouldn't be trying to start it - cam belt isn't a bad idea if you don't want it to go bang.

Could also be lack of heat in engine caused by broken heaterplugs or low compression (sometimes happens if piston rings stick). To get both of these in best form you'll need a very strong battery - can make the difference between an impossable and an easy job.

thanks everyone, & Ringo, that picture you sent me a link to helped
greatly,
when she bought the bl**dy thing home & tried to start it she pulled out
this wire that was only connected at one end,. to the battery, turns
out, miss numpty, that helped me waste a day scratching my head :evil:,
that was connected to a very important fuse indeed,.

now with the glow plugs connected she started up very readily with very little smoke :D
