Is my 2.0L Aircooled too slow?

Post by T25rc »

I'd like to know your experiences on the 2.0l Aircooled t25 (mines a poptop).

Mine is slooww. It doesn't really have acceleration, it just gets faster slowly if you can imagine? It will manage about 60-65 on a flat road, and stay there. Up long steep hills along the motorway it will drop to about 25 (it was a pretty steep hill mind, holden hill devon if that means anything)

It's a 1980 engine thats pulling around 2 tonne, so i don't expect much, and it doesn't really bother me - i'm just wandering how fast yours are and if mines just knackered? :?

I dont think that speed is too bad....... how quick do ya wanna go?

I had one and it was a little slower than that, but now I have a 1.6td
and only really do 60 - 65 max (for some kind of economy).

If the oil consumption is ok, and you are getting 20 - 25 mpg out of
it doing that speed, I reckon thats pretty good....

Any thoughts anyone? is T25rc expecting too much from these performance buses????

Mine does the same, acceleration wise she isn't bad really. I try to stick around 55 - 60 in the old girl though. Know what you mean about the hills in Devon, some of them are quite big!

Our 'ol gal took us 2500 miles round France without any problems whatsoever so I can't complain.

Hi

Mine's a 81' poptop. Takes a lot to get it to drop below 30 on hills.
Can get up Sutton Bank in 2nd (Just). Tops out just over 80 flat out.

its really hard to say isnt it........

it could be a tired engine, or it could be how its being driven........
if you are used to a modern car, you will need to change your driving style, you are driving a underpowered 25 year old van, not a modern tupperwarebox, so the key word is momentum..... you need to use all the rev range between gear changes, and dont be scared to keep the revs up in a a lower gear in a incline........

i have a 2l aircold parked on my drive that will get up to and maintain the legal top speed limit on a motorway with some to spare no problem, definately got more go than a jx, and yes hills do pull it down, long slow inclines more so than quick steep hills, because you cant keep the momentum on long hills so well.......

Cheers guys.

Seems about right then, perhaps a little tired - maybe not! I'll give it a good service and weld the exhuast holes up. It won't help i suppose. A rev counter would help so i don't over do it (do they have limiters?!)

I think that i'm a versitile driver - my other car is a tuned 1300 watercooled mk2 golf (which isn't the easiest car to drive, but it's fun! 8) )

Found mine ran a hell of a lot better after a good service, new leads, dizzy etc etc. She was desperately in need of some tlc when I got her.

Good luck.

it may have rev limitation, and if it has, its on the rotor arm, centrafugal sprunloaded switch type job, they come in two sizes, 4700rpm and 5600 rpmiirc, or about that, or you could have no limitation, depending on the rotorarm you have.

all a rev counter will do is depress you on hills!

Sadly they are neglected and abused by many 'previous owners' :(

you dont need a revcounter,, you use the dots on the speedo  (most folk dont even notice they're there) if you look you have 1, 2 and 3dots,, use them to change gear and you'll find it doesn't lose momentum on the hills so bad.
you'll be suprised how many revs you should be using.
the secret is to change to third etc just before the speedo pulls down to the 3 dots etc. which means you'll be changing while the engine is still in it's power zone. try it and you'll find that the bus will fairly hustle along and keep up with most t25's but if you let it drop below the dots before changing down it will just continue downward. similarly changing up if you hang on till it hits the dots for the next gear it will accelerate more srongly. don't worry if it sounds like you're thrashing it cos it was designed to run that way.
and do stop the exhaust from blowing as that saps more power than having the brakes on

Cheers for the advice, i'll sort the exhuast asap aswell! 8)

My speedo cable is currently stuck out of the middle of the hub and the speedo isn't working - what should be there, some kind of special nut?

Cheers!

well have to agree with all my a/c is about the same change of the speedo dots etc goes well depends how much you carrying too poss over 2 ton total around 20 to a gallon these things were built when petrol cost less i have just changed the rotor arm on mine with the rev limiter and it still hits the limit according to the speedo but that may be out i changed the wheels so a coupe of mph either way all makes a diff
if my vans a rocking dont worry fixing it again lol
