1700 diesel no start!!!!!! AGAIN!!!
Hi all just had van back from sprayers and they left the radio on nice one!!!! So the battery is dead, got it started from jump leads.I left it ticking over for 20 mins, then switched off left for about 45mins,tried again and it just winds and winds and the glow plug light on the dash no longer comes on.About 4 months ago changed glow plugs and heater relay, and by passed the fuse by the relay its been fine untill the battery went dead,so my question is= Is it just the battery? or may i have other problems? any info would be great cheers dave.

If the coolent is warm maybe the temp sender is not letting the heaterplugs run but the engine might actully need them (after 40mins they will be needed and should be working but if they don't...)? Try unplugging the temp sender, think its the red plug. SHould give you full heat as the relay will think the engine is cold, unless the relay is dead. If you've left the engine to get really cold again the plugs might work anyway.
If you've left it on tickover to charge the battery it won't have done very much as the altinator needs to be doing afew revs to generate any significant amps, on tickover its bairly enough to keep the warning light off. Take it for a 15 minute+ drive, much better than an hours tickover.
If you've got starting problems with a known charged battery its worth investigating. If the heaterplugs or starter don't seem to do much with a depleated battery they might not be faulty at all - they don't work well if they don't get the amps they need.

There are 3 locaions, as yours isn't a turbo it'll only have/use 2 but I'm not sure which (the 3rd is a coolent pump switch on turbo engines). They are on the plastic water flanges convienently hidden in these pictures but you can see the big hoses going into them. There are 2 places in the red circle (the picture is of a turbo engine so it has the round LDA can above the flange, should be able to see things better on an N/A) and there can also be one on the front of the head shown green.
One will be the dash temp guage, the other the heaterplug control. Both senders are black and are both the same so it doesn't matter which plug goes where (you could swap them and if the dash reads different you know somethings wrong). Temp guage is a black plug, heaterplug is a red one. There is a latch on the plug.
