Injection to carb?

Post by ELVIS »

Ok , following on from my previous thread. Have loadsa help from a couple of you guys via phone ( cheers chaps , you know who you are :D )
cheers to all the 'posters' and PMs to!

It appears quite a few of you running lpg on a 2.1 have ditched the injection set-up in favour of a carb pff a 1.9.
Although i own a set of spanners and do most of my own 'basic' van stuff - swp engines/suspension/brakes etc etc i dont like wading in blind.I reckon swapping it over is easily within my capabilities with a bit of guidance (hopefully)
Stripping it out ? Easy enough taking your time and not going mad with the side cutters. Same for bolting it all up i guess.

wiring loom - is it a seperate loom that is fitted around the engine bay ? once i start stripping it out/undoing connectors/removing ECU,ISV,DSV etc etc is it pretty obvious where to stop?

once i have stripped it all back and put the carb on what the issues ? I am guessing the fuel line will need a pressure regulator fitted somewhere before the carb ? filter ? injection filter or ditch it and put a boggo standard plastic one inline instead ?

Dizzy ? ditch the 2.1 dizzy in favour of a matching 1.9 one for the carb ?

I think the only sender i need to think about is the ECU temp one - just leave it unconnected in situ ?

Electric choke on carb , any ignition live ? where do you guys go off ?

Timing for lpg ? 10' still ? (will still run super unleaded  )

erm, er, erm - anything else ? anyone wanna post/PM/send me a telephone number would be most appreciated. Likewise anyone in wales who has done it and can over see me spannering would be greatly received .

Lastly , what is the difference in performance? Seeing as the the only difference when running on LPG is the manifold/runners can i expect similar performance between the to set ups ?

This is still very much at the 'thinking about it' stage at the mo!

cheers Elvis

step 1,find a dead dg, you will need the loom that plugs into the black box on bulkhead and carb, manifold, air cleaner,as late a engine as poss as the wires will be compatibile, remove injection equipment and loom and ignition .loom by unplugging it all from the white round plugs in black box, refitt dg loom by plugging in white round plugs to black box, your clever enough to build the rest up now,do get it re-jetted on a rolling road, this is critical as you have the wrong carb on the wrong engine and it will be running lean, the last one i did was making 82 bhp at the wheels which was ace since it had a df in it,cj.
bought some real off roaders!!!!!!!

Why are you converting back to carb technology? Isn't injection a way better method of fuelling an engine doing away with chokes/smothing out running and power bands?
It is by will alone that I set my 'van' in motion!

going to full time LPG so will barely need it . This is just an idea at the moment but seeing as all the injection parts are 20+ yrs old they to will wear out/fail sometime . Seeing as the gas is more tempermental with ignition side/leaks etc then it kinda makes sense .

If any of the electrical side of it fails (AFM for example) the cost of replacement will not be far off the cost of a carb/fannymold etc.

There are quite a few of us running a DJ with the standard DG carb/LPG set up.

Can't tell you about the Injection v Carb bit ... as ours was a 1.9DG carb/lpg and swapped for a 2.1DJ straight onto the same carb/lpg ensemble.

The DJ runs fine on the DG carb set up, apparently it's 'too lean' but our's was checked out and there was no problem. The DJ's got far more low down grunt and you find youself pulling out of tight corners and excellerating away in 4th (of 5) and you tend not to notice hills 8) . I get ~180 miles on 50 litres of lpg, that's commuting round the Peak District, nearer 210 on a run. I don't know what the top speed is .... had it sat at 130kmh (80mph) for quite a while on holiday on't Autoroute and there seemed loads left .... but I've never pushed it to find out what it'll do 'flat out'.

I'm surprised shepster hasn't had a say here ... but I helped fit the carbed 2.1. from the 1.9 early engine

and happy to report there were no issues apart from resetting the mix

jeez does it pull sweet :D

Good to see someone else is doing the same thing.

Just fitted a 2.1DJ onto an early DG. Had to fit new cooling pipes front to rear, the plumbing for the coolant has still to be tested as the thermostat and heater pipes are now completely different.

Trying to get the lpg, manifold and heating all plumbeb in has been fun. I'll find out in Monday when I refit the exhaust and fill her up if I've got it right.
