Glow plug light?

Why would my glow plugs stay on longer at different times? as far as I know the relay just sends the power to the plugs for a predetermined time that should not vary Have I fitted smart plugs that tell the relay how long they want to stay on for

Theres a coolent temp sender on the engine, the control relay uses this to decide how much preheating it needs so if its warm the orange light won't be on as long as it is if cold, if its very hot the light might not come on at all. When it thinks the engine is ready to start it puts the LED out (though the heaterplugs might still be working for a bit longer).

If it works properly well done, I've been trying for a year to get mine working properly, luckally it usally does full 12sec heating when its not needed which is better than no heating when it is needed - it anoys me though! Every now and then it works properly just to show me it can before going back to full heating - that anoys me more!

Hmmmm, To follow on from my thread..........

My coolant temp gauge doesn't work. Could this be my problem? Although dash light only comes on when engine is cold. So maybe not.

The heaterplugs and temp guage work off different senders but I'm pritty sure the senders are the same, so as they are seperate it won't be the cause of your instrement fault. It does mean though you have an ideal sender to test the wireing with - swap them round and see if the guage works, if not and the heaterplugs still work properly you've got a wireing gremlin. As its a turbo engine don't mix the temp senders with the aux pump switch, they look simular (I'd say identical but I have a fealing my van has 3 senders fitted instead of 2 senders and a switch as they all behave the same and the aux pump doesn't work properly - if they are infact different colours or have some distingwishing features I'd love to know!).
