gear shifting probs

Post by Rozzo »

hi all.
yes i know look in the wiki,, i have and its still as clear as mud to me so wonder if anyone can help.
i have been having problems selecting 1st for some time,, it would only go in directly out of second. bus is 2l Aircooled with 4 speed box. this was nothing more than a slight inconvenience but now i'm really struggling to get first, and sometimes struggling to get 2nd. its like the lever just doesn't go far enough across. once it lines up it drops in very easily so i dont think its a gearbox problem.
after reading the wiki and my crap haynes manual i think its the rearmost linkage bushes where the "guide pin" is. i have around 5 mm of slack up down and sideways in this guide? the rubber boot is missing if it should have one so i suspect that any bushes in here are worn out. can someone confirm that this lift is not normal and that i need the bush or wotevers in there please?
any ideas where to get the parts from would be appreciated too
cheers

Julian, 5mm seems an awful lot of play. The bushes, flanges and bellows were available from JK :- http://shop.justkampers.com/index.php/cPath/2_1024_1156

Here's the pretty piccie :- http://shop.justkampers.com/index.php/c ... /1a/page/2

Not sure about the early stuff but the later ones have the hard yellow plastic bushes which fit together with the bellows ... I assume the early ones just have the clear plastic ones ?

Rozzo,
We had a similar problem with gear selection, particularly 2nd. I eventually narrowed this down to a kippered slave cylinder which was replaced with a JK one and now gear selection is fine.

Don't know if this is anything to do with your problem but thought it might be helpful...

well i bloomin never
took the guide pin nut off and withdrew the pin to find that the bush on mine was made of,,,,,,,,, FLAMIN INSULATIN TAPE   (if you're gonna bodge summat, please bodge it properly  )
no wonder it got progressively worse as it stripped each thin layer off
i've now made a bush out of a large ptfe insulator and i now have all me gears back.
thanks again ian fer the parts find, i'll stick em in the essential parts cupboard in the bus when they arrive
