Any need to insulate my van??

Post by Chrissyt »

I'm covnerting my panel van, and is there any need to insulate? I'm planning to go use it alot over the winter, so is it a worth while expeniture?

I plan to get a propex heater, will it reduce the heat loss a substantial amount i.e noticable to the fuel bill???

Also what insulation is recommended?

Chris

Yes, you should insulate, otherwise the heat from the Propex will go straight out the roof. I used a white closed-cell poly foam in 15mm sheets from Reimo, glued to the panels with contact adhesive. Do NOT use rockwool...

If you intend using the van during the winter then I would advise you insulate it. It will also reduce condensation and all the problems of saturated floor to panel joints. Do a search as I seem to remember an excellent thread on this with photographs and details of the insualting material used. You will lose a lot of heat through the windows and JK sell complete sets of window insulation if you need them. Carpet the floor too.

Most importantly ...while the van is still naked and empty and before you do anything else ...soak every nook and cranny with waxoil. Especially all the crevices where panels meet and the internal cavities, also inside the sliding door, the hatch and under the window frames. Access will never be that easy again.

Sleeping/cooking in the van will always cause extra moisture, moisture that will collect in those areas and cause rust.
