Tappets maybe? How long had the van been standing for?

Hi thanks for your reply
I wondered about them but what I know about engines is a bit limited to say the least..............standing about a week after doing 150 miles.

Just read your link and bingo my wallet feels much better ..............thanks

Warm it up and take for a half hour drive, should quieten down though 'orrible and sounds like damage being done for a while, quite common, if old oil change it, but unlikely to improve matters much.

This happend regularly to our last van. As said, tappets...

Used to happen more if parked on a slope and if oil level was more than 5mm off the top mark.

I had this problem after I changed the oil for a semi synth. Left for a couple of days and tappets clanked every time. Changed back to Castrol GTX and no tappet clanking even after a couple of weeks standing.

All good advice.....mine sometimes does the same if it is parked up for a few days after coming back from a long run....the oil is hot and so very thin, the engine has stopped in such a position that one or more of the hydraulic tappet elements is under pressure from the cam lobes, the oil drains out of the tappet so when re-started several days later it takes 5-10minutes to properly fill.
Thicker oil can help 15W/40 is good.
Regular oil changes

As a side note* back in the 80's when I was carrying out PDI's (pre delivery inspections) on wasserboxer Transporters, they would commonly make this heavy tappet noise from brand new! to get rid of the noise we would thrash the engine on road test, basically redline it once the engine was up to temperature. Which as you can appreciate, is a little disconcerting but was the only way the tappets would bleed out the air.
