1.6td engine knackered

Post by Spiral »

Took my 1990 1.6td westy atlantic for an mot today and it failed on poor exhaust emissions. Hardly surprising as clouds of white smoke been belching out for last month and engine also spewing oil. Pressure test done on engine and basically I was told that the engine was on it's way out  Garage could rebuild it but probably better to get recon engine for a straight swap. Does anyone know somewhere I can buy a recon engine at a competetive price? Also which other engine types would fit a 1990 T3 1.6td?

Apologies if all this sounds a bit vague. I know very little about diesel engines :?

Looked at alternative engine forum most of last night (yet to look on BY) but all I ended up with was a headache :? With the very little knowledge that I have on diesel engines I think the best idea for me is to go for a recon engine on a like for like basis. I have someone lined up to supply and fit one, but they aren't able to carry out the work until after 8th Sepember (see other post here). Problem is that I don't now have an MOT. Was wondering if anyone knows any quick fixes on reducing a smokey exhaust enough to get me through an MOT until the engine swap. Elvis kindly suggested biodiesel but the only place that sells biodiesel close to where I live is now closed until 1st Sep!!! :(

I've heard a lot of people put a cup of petrol in the tank of a diesel engined vehicle so to pass emissions tests - might be worth googling.
