Hello,

on the way home from the CVWOC jamboree today, the van was running rough and seemed to be missing on at least one cylinder. Lack of power and smoke (white/blue) billowing out the back made me pull over and I was then towed home when the AA decided it wasn't just an injector playing up and was something more serious...

The engine is an AAZ with about 100K on it out of a Golf, fitted about three moths ago...typical, really :( It's certainly burning through oil, but it's not touching it's coolant, which is still nice and full. So, which of these is the most likely?

Blown head gasket (probably between cylinders)
Holed piston
Broken piston ring(s)
Dropped valve
Timing belt slipped

Experience tells me it'll be the most expensive cause, whatever it is :( Roughly speaking, what sort of bill am I looking at for replacing the head gasket? If it is the head gasket, what other nastiness am I looking at putting right? Will it have affected the oil pump or the valves at all?

Any thoughts will be much appreciated...

Not the same engine but I had the crank pulley wheel (I think that is what it was called) slipped throwing the timing out causing similar problems.

That's interesting, thanks for that...

When you say the crank pulley, do you mean the one with the timing belt attached? My bottom pulley has a pretty hefty dent in it and wobbles a bit, but it's just the pulley for the alternator as far as I can see...
