Plastic knobbly string for the glovebox

The piece of plastic that stops the glovebox lid falling open and tipping all the contents on the floor is missing on my 1985 van. Any one know the best place to get one?

calls me silly why not just use bit of string or fishing wire or infact even black electrical wire one end screwed to the dash the other with a knot in it? take 5 mins cost nowt

My bit of thin electrical wire with a knot on the end works just fine.

Earlier this month I posted a question entitled Glove Box mystery and got some really good answers... thanks all!... but it seems after my appeal for someone who has an original late glovebox with all its original bits to give us the definitive answer in words or pics:

What covered the fuses to protect them and how did it fit?

What originally stopped the glove box from falling too far?

That no one has an original glovebox and that over the years everone has lost some or all of the original parts.

IS THERE ANYBODY OUT THERE WHO CAN SHOW US AN ORIGINAL?

I wouldn't settle for a piece of knotted string if it was an engine part ...would you?

Fair play, I understand where you are coming from. I tried to obtain the correct plastic strap thingeys and couldnt get them anywhere. They are definately obsolete from VW and I unfortunately had to resort to alternative methods of stopping it falling too far. I would have preferred the original parts but they just aren't out there

I found a piece of black cable that was a tight fit in the small holes, the keyhole in the beam under the dash was hidden under the wiring harness. Unfortunately when I tied a knot in it the knot would not pass through the larger diameter of the keyhole. I stripped back about 8mm of the plastic insulation and soldered on a mainjet from an Amal carburetter. I had to open up the hole in the jet to take the wire. On the glovebox end I just had to tie a knot in it ( the cable that is) It seems to work OK and after a few trial openings it is still in place. It's probably worth about 50 quid with all the faffing about I had to do!!!.

The fuses are covered in my 81 van with a clear plastic cover that just clips into place.

i thought the knotted trainer lace was original equipment!!
