Subaru None starter (Ej22)

Post by big red bus »

Hello, I have just come a cross a T3 van powered by a subaru legacy Ej22 coded engine (1995). At the moment the van does not run. I have got the van turning over but have no fuel and no spark. I have checked the wiring to the ecu, coil and ignition module. I have feed and good earths but do not have any test procedures to see where I should have feed and earths and which wires switch etc. I can get the fuel pump to run by putting a 12v feed to it but when the ignition is turned on the pump does not prime and when turnng over does not run. Does any one know if these two are both controlled by the ecu. Has any one else had a similar problem or am I on my own. Any help or suggestions are much appreciated. Thanks for reading.

There should be four connectors by your ECU. Two black and two green. The green ones when connected should test the system fuel pump, fan ETC. Oh Bu$$er pm'd ya. Phone.

Right ok the black connectors When joined together should give you error codes on the little red light. That should tell you roughly what is wrong.

If the fuel pump doesn't spin check the relay. It should be one of the two round topped ones, the other is the fan relay. You could perhaps try using the fan relay as a temp fix to check the pump?
If it is an earlier ECU with OBD1 then the ecu itself has a check led inside you can see through an inspection hole in the case. As said above you have to join the two spare black single pin plugs together to put it in test mode. If it is an early system with OBD1 you can count the number of long / short pulses. I have the code list in a book if you are stuck but I don't have time to type all the codes before work.
If it is a later type ECU with OBD2 the above may not be correct and you could need a code reader, I have an earlier engine so don't know much about the later set up to help I'm afraid. I believe they changed obd1 to obd2 typically in 1995.
Good luck!!!

E D I T And to answer your first question the fuel pump is switched by the ecu via a relay (one of the round ones)

Have looked at ecu and there is a green led you can see throguh a hole in the side. Would this be the engine check light. I have looked for two black and two green wires but cannot find them. I think they may have been cut off but will properly unravel loom and have a look. Do you know what pins they come from out the ecu? thanks
