Replacement carbs

I am 'The artist formerly known as burnso' TAFKAB for short

Long time no post, but I've had no pooter or email for quite some time!

Just had the ol' bus in for a service and they recommended getting a new carb as they couldn't adjust the mixture on mine and its running a bit weak.

It's a 1.9 DG, and it currently has a Pierburg PE2(?) attached, but I was wondering if there is anything out there that's easy to fit that is perhaps a bit better, Weber perhaps? What sort of money would I be looking at to get one, any ideas?

Weber is going to cost in the region of £250 unless you get lucky. Bolt on, claims BHP and MPG but I have not gone this route so can't comment. I've got a twin choke 40mm DCNF Weber on a one off manifold and now it's sorted is better all round compared to the stock Pierburg. Could talk to Laurie Pettitt, he did mine and it worked out OK. Others will have more info...

Get a 2nd hand one from Andyvan for approx £40, then get it referbished for about £40 and Bob's your Aunty

Trouble is when you take vehicles of this age to a garage--they are scared to take too much apart in case they make it worse---even my local old vw specialist is reluctant to strip pierburgs---you can get gasket sets from GSF if you want to have a go yerself--

I've already had a new gasket set fitted, but the mixture screw is donald ducked thats why I've been recommended to get a new un.

Is there a weber that fits straight on, and if there is, which one should I be looking for.

If not, who would be likely to refurb a second hand carb if I did get one off andyvan?

GSF used to supply direct replacement Webers but Webers are no longer made afaik---have you tryed your local VW parts dept--they may still supply new Pierburgs---not nessaccarily dearer than others--

refurb of pierberg is easy enough diy might involve:

strip it
clean it, clean it and clean it again til all the mucks gone
replace replaceables (service kit from gower and lee ~£30)
maybe replace choke pull down unit if knackered (~£20)
maybe replace throttle pull down if knackered (guess similar price to choke)

put back together

if buying second hand pierberg check bit that cooling system attaches to to work the choke has eletric cable attached (~£60 for a replacement one of these), you can check pull down units by sucking on the pipes, if the choke/throttle holds its position whilst you are sucking probably ok, if there is a leak you will see throttle/choke move back to where they started. but you problably have some servicable bits on your current pierberg.

mine had entire new accelerator pump assembly the pump shaft is shorter on earlier models, I put on the longer one and think the van is a bit quicker off the mark now.

I got meself a good un after spending £70 in total. If you find one in better nick you may get to spend less
