Intercooler Question

Post by in_the_garage »

Hello,

I have a 1.9TD engine from a '94 Golf in my T25, on a 5 speed gearbox. The engine as standard doesn't come with an intercooler, but I was wondering whether there was any benefit in fitting one? I could easily mount one in the airflow of the RHS air intake, as the airbox etc was removed as part of the conversion. Would it have to be something pretty specific to the engine, or could I get away with something fairly similar, like this.

Also, I've noticed that the van now runs a bit cold at low speeds, but a bit hot at high speeds - would fitting an oil cooler help, do you reckon? If so, is there an oil cooler that suits the 1.9TD engine?

Any help will be much appreciated,

Thanks :)

Proper front mounted oil cooler kit available from Baxter.

www.brickwerks.co.uk

Was on the online shop, but can`t see it now, worth ringing him business hours.
Keep it real.

Thanks for that - I'll give them a ring and see if the oil cooler would suit a 1.9TD

If anybody has any thoughts on the intercooler, please feel free to comment.

Thanks :)

It will defo fit the 1.9 AAZ engine, or most other VW engines fitted in a T25 come to mind.

Intercooler is only worth doing if it does what it`s supposed to do, actually cool the charge air in a satisfactory manner, not just a couple of degrees but a useful amount, and I`m yet to see an install that does that reliably. I`ve got a long and thin intercooler from a 1.9 TD Sharan/Galaxy that mounts underneaththe van at the gearbox nose, as it looked to be the ideal place for air flow, fits great. Problem is in the pipe plumbing, it`s just too tight to get satisfactory pipe runs from the turbo and back to the inlet to make it feasible, without compromising the pipe diameter or airflow. I doubt you`ll get any sort of good airflow though the side air intake if you mounted a small intercooler in there. I`ve a nice intercooler from another TD motor that would probably fit if you`re interested??

Chargecooler is the way to go, with a pumped water system to a radiator up the front. Not cheap to do, but the most effective solution and the only one worth the hassle in my opinion, I`ve spent large sums of money trying, and failed with the standard option of an air / air intercooler.
Keep it real.

I can get the kits anytime, I've just knocked them off the shop for the moment as I have run out of brackets and I am getting them made at the moment.
Kit will go back up when I have all the bits in stock.

inter cooler

Post by colinMSC »

i have been getting the bits together to add an inter cooler.
my thoughts were to cut the n/s corner tray out.
I found a fan asisted intercooler off a shogun 2.5 tdi that will fit the space. :D
after fitting and piping it all up , all that i need to do is wire the fan and box the intercooler in .
another thing that i know has been done is to add a scoop to the air intake vent. i think this will work well , well im going to give it a go and i'll let you all know how it goes

I did this a few years back.
It works, although best to leave the fan running and put a "pooh" shield below to stop stones being thrown up, also direct the shield to open towards the rear as you can take advantage of the area of low pressure behind the van.
You will also need to block off the area behind the back light to the engine bay so you direct ALL the air in that pillar over the cooler and out towards the rear.
