Loose drive shaft??

Post by divingbelle »

I drive an '84 DG watercooled T25 and I have always had some clunking going into 2nd gear. It got worse once and my mechanic at the time said it was a loose drive shaft and fixed it (or at least got it back to normal) by tightening it. It has now started to get worse again - having problems with 3rd gear too esp. when the engine is hot i.e. after driving some distance.

Is this really just the drive shaft? Is it a common problem? Can I check it and tighten it myself, being kind of a newbie (I change oil and filters etc. myself)? And can I stop it happening again?

If I can do it myself can someone post some photos showing me where to look.

Thanks in advance

Both I think, the second gear clunk which was always present happens any time I go into second but is getting louder now and I am not sure about the 3rd gear problem, I have only done the one long trip when I started to notice it and tend only to be changing gears coming up to roundabouts etc. so it may be related to going round corners, not sure but my instinct is to say both straught and round bends.
