Car tyres on our Vans empis!

Post by ali thommo »

Just a heads up to people!

We took our van in today for tracking, the garage advised that we should replace the tyres because we had car tyres on our van. They were only rated at around a ton and all the tyre walls where cracked, we have had the van about 4 or 5 months and have suspected something wrong in that area (wheels/suspention/tracking) for a long time due to the handling but never got round to checking it because of other things getting done, anyway we replaced all tyres today and ive yet to properly drive it but my girlfreind says it handles much better.

These tyres where on empis and as empis are more popular on the beetles (i think!) id check over your tyres if you have empis as its not immediatly obvious.

Anyway we should have a safe and sound reading festival now! Hope the tyre thing isnt glaringly obvious to everyone else!

Thing is...it's not just the tyres that have a maximum load rating...the wheels do too, did you notice the load ratings on the Empis?

I'm using car tyres on merc steel rims but its a caravelle without an elevating roof and seems fine on them. It 'just' meets the load rating. Old tyres don't help though and a vehicle thats been standing for a very long time can see the tyres die of old age and crack before the treads go.

I'm certainly getting better handling on car tyres having used commercial tyres in the past so when they're up for renewal i think i'll be looking for something in between if i can find anything suitable.
