Battery question
Hi, I have a 1985 1.9 watercooled caravelle with a DG engine. The battery on at the minute is an Autostar Type 63. With a capacity of 40Ahr & cranking amps of 370. Is this the right battery for my vehicle? It normally starts ok if used regularly, but if left for a while is very reluctant and quite often flatens the battery. If I need a new battery what price should I pay& which one will I need? Thanks Don

Just call me Johnnie Cash. More questions than answers.

Your battery is a bit underspecified, especialy if you run camping accesories like interior lights of it.
Check all the connections between battery and starter are tight and clean.
I think VW origionaly fitted 45Ahr or 63Ahr.
A 40 Ahr battery should start your van, but if it is getting old, or not charging fully, you may have problems.
If you dont have a voltmeter get one.
Check the voltage on the battery with the engine running, it should be in the region of 13.5 to 14.5V and without around 12.5V
The wiki above will tell you which batteries fit under the seat. (look in the camping electric section)

We have a Halfords HB075 battery as a starter battery. We've got the same in as a "leisure" battery. Fits in both battery boxes. Some people would advise against using a starter battery as a leisure battery though. I think leisure batteries have thicker plates in them?
