Engine Oil - Quality and Effect

Post by AngeloEvs »

Checked the VAG service history for my 1.9DG, oil they used - Castrol Magnatex. When I bought the van I never suffered any tappet noise on start up even when left for a couple of weeks. That is, until I replaced it with a (supposedly good quality) non-branded semi synthetic and the engine seemed to run hotter but put it down to warmer weather. Drained and refilled with Castrol GTX Mineral last week......no more tappet noise, even after one week of none use, and the engine temperature is cooler! Some one else on here claimed that their engine temp went down when they renewed with Castrol. Any one else noticed the same?

Thats made me feel guilty. Always used the cheapest multigrade in every VW I've ever had. Best oil I found was Shell Rimula - ran loads of bugs on that.
