When to check oil level??

Post by Fully Loaded Cali' »

Daft question, but.....

(engine is a 1.6TD JX, 160,000 miles)

I fill to top mark on dipstick and i have been regulary checking the level. The level drops to just above the bottom mark on the dip stick, even after 30mins the level remains the same, so i top back up to just under top mark. (blaming engine wear for the high consumption). Note van is on the level

The other night i checked the level, as i had just done a 100 mile trip, and the level was on the minimum. I couldn't be bothered to top up that night so left it until the next morning. To my suprise the oil level was slightly above the top mark! I have been topping oil up regulary after engine has cooled down and think now i have actually been over filling!!

Why is it taking over night for the level to correct itself?? Could my filter be blocked?

Simular thing with mine. I now check mine first thing in the morning before starting. I find if the oil level is over the top mark the engine will use a lot of oil by burning it off. If I recall previous posts here the JX don't like being over filled.
