One worn tyre, ramifications??

Post by eric »

Hello everyone,
I have tried the Wiki Information Section, but was unable to find an answer, so I'm rather hoping for some help and guidance from you guys/gals, as to what might be the underlying problem.

Ok, the bus is currently being "looked after" by a relative in Bristol.
She has informed me that the front nearside tyre is so worn it needs to be replaced.
"Oh" I said. "So, it's just the one is it?" I asked.
"Yes, the others, Uncle Eric, are fine" my niece stated (as if this was good news).
"Rachel (the niece), don't you think it's odd that since the bus had 4 brand new Michelins 7000 mls ago (plus the spare off course), that something is not quite right?" :(
"Um" she mumbled. Quickly adding "But there's plently of tread on the others though, Uncle Er."

The bus is going for a full service and an MOT on 16th of this month at a Bristol garage.

What are the things I can
remind the garage of to look for, check out and rectify?

Please bear in mind good folks that I'm unable to check the bus out for myself/do not intimately know the general mechanics of vehicles and how they work.
eg:- "track rod ends" I seem to think this may have something to do with the wheels going around in the correct way.

So, I freely admit I am a buffoon in these matters ............ please forgive me.

Kind regards to everyone.

Eric,
Check out the links to a couple of sites with info and pictures on tyre wear and general info. It might help you determine what wear has taken place and be able to rectify. Also for quick reference Haynes will have info on tyre condition (in most manuals whatever make)

If as you indicate it is ONE tyre wearing it could be simple over or under inflation, or serious due to suspension / mechanical failure. In either case it would be worth getting a check done, many tyre fitting depots (kwick fit, ATS etc etc) do free checks on tyre & brake condition (to get your bussiness) so get a check done and decide if you would like them to carry out the work, or take else where for some other or garage to do at lower charge. At least you will know what the problem is but get quote

Hope this may help

Steve

Thanks for that advice Steve.

I forgot to mention that the "bus" in question is a 1987 VW Caravelle GL Synchro, with the propshaft removed by none other than the boy----Thomas (Diamond Hell) in 2006.

I have a sneaky feeling it's going to serious.
