knocking sound when pulling away and stopping???? **FIXED**

Post by dirtyroger »

Hello ya'll i come for more advice,

I have an irritating knocking sound that happens sometimes, as i start pulling away. It starts of slow they speeds up until i can't hear it anymore. When i slow down the knocking starts again and when i'm about to stop i can hear a slow grinding as if metal to metal. This started last week on a trip away and is now becoming more frequent.

I have recently had the buzzer of doom go off when driving between 30 and 40 mph, but took it to the garage for a oil pressure test and they said all was fine. Do you think the knocking and 'buzzer of doom' could be linked.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be the culprit of the knocking sound? i've had a look under the van and there is nothing obvious.

The van is a 1.9 petrol automatic.

It doesn't sound good, I dearly hope its not gonna die on me :(

Thanks in advance

We had a dreadful knocking that was accompanied by a grinding sound, and it turned out our wheel nuts were loose. It was so bad though that we couldn't have driven far with it, so it might not be the same problem you have.

As you don't mention the noise stopping as you change gear I assume it is something to do with final drive train or maybe even one of the front wheels. Notwithstanding the posibility that something in your automatic box drags and clonks until it self centralises at speed I would be looking at your drive shaft couplings or wheel bearings. Or maybe even loose coupling bolts. These bolts are known to work loose and could self centralise at speed (like your clothes in the spin dryer). To detect wear here you could start off by trying to lift and rotate the shaft with your hand or get the wheel off the ground and watch the shaft while you rotate the wheel. You may need to lever it at each end using a wooden block on the floor to lever against not to the point you lift the vehicle but more than you could do by hand alone. A very worn wheel bearing or one with a busted cage can make this noise as the rollers/balls tend to gather up until then space out at speed. My brother who ran a small garage got one over on a few major Ford service stations by tracking down a similar problem although a thumping in this case, to a bulge in a rear tyre which somehow retracted over about 40MPH! Who would have thought of that?!
Good luck

One things for sure, if it IS a CV joint or loose bolts, eventually you'll pull away at a junction, there'll be an almighty THUNK and you'll have no drive. You'll soon find the suspect joint then but its sods law it'll happen right in the middle of a busy box junction or when turning on to a main road. Has been every time its happened to me

Agree with above. Go prod around before it lets you down when you're done up like a dogs dinner to go out somewhere.

My Mk 2 golf did that pulling out of a junction too, so they must be designed that way!

Stray bolt went through side of gearbox housing too, so it wasn't a cheap fix.

Got an intermitent sound coming from the rear of the van, wife describes it as "a monkey knocking coconut shells together". It varies with speed and is louder when under load, not engine linked as does not vary with revs. Thought it would probably be CV joints, any other suggestions?

Yep sounds like a CV joint. ours was intermittant - not fun when you are driving up through glen nevis - miles from nowhere and no phone signal...thought the engine was going to jump ship

...now the fun starts...which side and is it the inner or the outer...4 to choose from :D

It's a messy job but stripping them down and repacking them gives you a great feeling - I've still got the other side to do on ours - although there isn't any problem at the moment, I figure it will save us money in the long run. It's not too hard to do!

The problem was a bolt that had worked loose on the exhaust. Simple fix and now a relatively silent running T25. lovely..

Thanks for all your help, it wasn't as bad as i thought
