A single hex socket or six point socket has a hexagonal opening, unlike the normal 12 point or double hex sockets.

They normally have a better fit and are superb when you have iffy nuts!

Hopefully someone will post a picture showing one.

Yes and to be honest I can't see a use for 12 point sockets as most people have ratchets anyway. Useful in a ring spanner I admit but six points means less chance of a rounded off nut or bolt head.

Em,
If you are off buying tools take a look at a set of double depth six point sockets.

They are usually long enough to fit over studs, etc.

If you go to a reasonable tool shop you should be able to buy them separately. I would go for an 8, a 10 & a 13mm.

i bought some impact sockets for that purpose. bash the crap out of them they undo pretty much everything :)
