I have one that does this too! She has always run fine! Heater works nicely too....

As already said...

Anywhere within a few needles widths of the centre is normal....

All vans will be slightly different

Anything below or above this under normal driving should be investigated.. either sender or gauge fault or it really is the engine temp, so T stat stuck for too cold and Tstat rad/system blockage for too hot..

Any engine problems (head gaskets etc) will quickly pressurise the cooling system and spew coolant out...

I now have sorted the problem! I put in a thermostat from a VW Corrado V6 1992 which opens at 79C instead of the 87C standard one. It now runs just below the led in the centre. I also tested the 87C one in work with a temp meter gradually heating the water, it actually opened at 92C and then only a crack, were as the 79C opened wide at 80C. The Corrado one did need the bottom spring loaded disc reducing in diameter to match the original but all other dimensions are the same.
Cheers

1.6TD

My temp needle used to sit bang over the LED, then I started using Aral Ultimate diesel.
It now sits to the just left of the LED and climbs just past the LED when slugging up a climb (the climb takes 10 mins at 70 - 80 kmh).

The motor also runs quieter with slightly increased mpg.

I got to jump on :(
My temp gauge sat on or just below dead centre went upto just over half way when the fan would kick in 8)
Then I fitted an after market gauge, which is fed from / on a T peice with the dash one.
The problem is that the after market one reads correctly and the dash one only moves up to 1/4 mark.
Any suggestions how to fix it as I would like to be greedy and have both working
