Diesel fuel pump timing
Hi I have had a blown head gasket ,replaced it , new cambelt set the crank to the mark on the flywheel twisted the pump pulley so as the pin goes in set the cam so as the slot in the end is parallel to the cylinder head ( its slightly out maybe 0.1 0.2 of a mm ) but can't seem to get it any better . I then turned the engine over by by hand ( after removing pin in pump) , it will not start, only sort of runs for a few seconds but no more than that , do i now need to set the pump up ,i can,t find anything on the wiki about diesel pump timing on a 1.6 turbo or tools i might need .

sounds like you might have the pump set 180 degrees out - when setting it all up there is a hole in the pump sprocket that lines up with the pump mounting line this up and put a bolt in there then set the engine to TDC (use the hole in the gearbox bellhousing for find the TDC point)
It is by will alone that I set my 'van' in motion!

I think i have lined the pump up through the sprocket with the mounting plate when the mark on the flywheel is lined up through the gearbox hole the camshaft is parallel to the haed, it now runs on tick over to get it to tick over from before i used a funnel and straped it high up and pored diesel in without using the filter. Now it wont run past 2000 revs and smokes a lot, do you think I need to ajust the pump through the back to set it up finally
