Automatic transmission,just curious?

Post by Joloke08 »

Hi
i have to have a van with automatic transmission because of disability and because i only hold an auto licence but was curious to know if an autobox can simply be mounted to the engine of a manual?

I guess im wondering because theres more manuals out there and if i got a recon box and kept it well serviced surely converting a well maintained manual to auto could be a good move?

Not sure when im gunna get a van though?
Same old same old everytime i got funds something comes along like broken boiler leaky roof etc to put paid to my plans :(

just curious anyhoo, keeping my options open?

just find decent auto in first place or convert?

oh by the way how much work is involved in converting an imported left hand drive van to right hand drive?

Huggz
Jodie :)

Hi Jodie...

mucho work in changing from LHD to RHD - do a search on here, it has come up before.

onverting to auto from manual. You will need more than the box....the linkage and stick in the cab, the plastic surround in the cab is different too.

You will also need the torque converter (in place of clutch). Dunno what else. Would also have to remove all the manual stuff....pedals and pipework I suppose....and I would have thought therefore, that the reservoir is different, as its not supplying hydraulic fluid to the clutch system?

guesswork, though. You may be able to leave all the manual stuff in situ, and jsut block it off gear box end?

There are a fair few of these vans with auto boxes in. Just buy one that's had one fitted as standard. My old camper was an auto and lovely to drive :D (if you ignore when the original auto box disintergrating on the M6  )
