1.6td JX Huge Turbo Lag Narrow Power Band

Post by Pickles »

I have been driving my 1.9td Syncro Doka for a couple of weeks and I can't believe how much Turbo Lag there is and how narrow the power band is. (The engine is a stroked 1.6 JX)
There is no power till 2500 rpm then its all over by 4000 if you don't rev it hard and you drop below 2500 you are in the no power range again.
Is this right.
Any JX engine drivers want to test drive it and tell me if this is how is suppose to be.
Or better still does any body with a 2.1 syncro Doka want to swap.
I know the answer (No) but theres no harm in asking.

It sounds like you've created a monster there!

1.6TD has miles more lag than an AAZ anyway, I can't think that stroking it would improve matters much...... How come you've stroked the JX rather than swapped an AAZ in?

Still Syncro, just much fasterer

'power' is realative, but 2500 seems way too high for th eturbo to show effect. this should be 2000 rpm or below , otherwise its going to be a hectic journey.
as for the top end. 4500 is about the end of the road for this van, so it is narrow but the 5 gears are there to make full use of it? :)

Hope you put bigger injectors and modded the pump to suit the new capacity.

The Engine mods were done by a company called AW Engineering, VW Diesel specialists in Darwen Lancashire at a cost of £2000.
All done before I bought it
I did phone them at the time and they were most unhelpfull
I did get out of them that the turbo was standard.

Anyone who is fimilar with the JX engine syncro wants to drive it and let me know what they think about performance

Bring it over Dave, I'll have a raz in it.
Sounds like pump timing could be out though.
