will an early rear tailgate ( the one without the vw recessed badge) fit a later van ???

Hi, yes it will my friend.
My 1988 hi-top sports an early tailgate that the previous owner put on.
It don't look like there has been any alterations of the hinges/struts or bodywork.

yes, the only differences between early and late tailgates are the strut mountings, the badges and the lock button hole diameter..........
