if you have a problem with your engine then best tell us which one it is , no point in giving advice on a 1.9dg if it a diesel is it ?
as for you question about wether it being an air cooled makes a differance then the answer is yes ,because the w/c one don't have the seal or all the tin ware ( WHICH IN YOUR CASE WAS MAKING THE KNOCKING)
