Not had compression test yet or changed the oil which I know is well past its best.

Oil and filter is a lot less than an engine rebuild.. a stitch in time saves nine (or about x 90 in this case)!

Engine rebuild £anything£ based on quality of rebuild and what needs doing. 2nd hand lump, typically £100~£300 again depending on how guaranteed it is as worth the effort. You really want to hear and see it running!

Or just to get me by how good are the so called oil additives to stop it smoking?

I get Volkswagon Camper and Bus from W H Smiths and a quick thumb through the engine parts and rebuild ads should frighten you a bit.
It is worth mentioning where the smoke is coming from and at what parts of your journey. I don't have that much experience of flat fours but poor valve stem sealing on most engines result in a big cloud of smoke from the exhaust when acccelerating after slowing up on the overun with the throttle closed for instance. While smoke up the breather and dipstick is a good indicator of shot rings/pistons/liners. Just out of interest you understand. Worth checking some plonke hasn't been using that cats pee oil the Zetech engines use. Also for some reason my 2.1 Digijet will pump out a big cloud of smoke very rarely and randomly if I try to keep the oil level on the top noch of the dipstick but will do a thousand miles without a top up if I have it halfway between the notches. Maybe the oil splashes up into the pistons or maybe I have a short dipstick or sumat.

Agree with Ken & Harry on this one :ok

New quality filters and oil first. Or maybe oil tower to carb top pipe collapsed or kinked. Or check plugs, leads etc are in good order....

Don't overfill with new oil. Will burn it down to about half dipstick in no time.

Jeez! Finally beginning to sound like an old salt at this lark
