Temperature guage/warning light on.

Post by budbombpipe »

Hi, i'm having afew troubles with my 1.9 watercooled caravelle 78PS.
When i turn the key on, the temperature gauge needle goes from left side all the way over to the right and stays there. Also the warning light stays on flashing.
Near the thermostat??( at rear of engine top left?) there are 2 wire connectors hanging (1 has red/yellow wires) which i presume need connecting to the thermostat. I can see where they connect but dont know which connector goes to the top and which goes round the back on the side.Ive tried them connected to both but the gauge doesn't move. Also the top sender (its blue)can be pulled out quite easy, is this normal?
Also the connector with 2 wires, on the headertank has no power to it, is this surposed to be like this?
If i need to buy new senders & thermostat can any one recommed where? ive heard GSF thermostats are not that good.
Thanks

Hi I had the same prob a couple of weeks ago. The red warning l.e.d was flashing & the temp gauge stayed to the left. Turned out to be the blue coloured sensor. JK have replacement sensors but they done stock the "O" ring and plastic retaining clip. Endedm up bying them from a local VW garage.
Good luck, Stewart :)
