said i'd ask on here & see if anyone has any ideas as to what
might be wrong, but all she could describe was that it popped
(rather than bang) & got really really smokey, she said it didn't
sound like there were bits of metal flying around in there but
it did sound "really f*****g rough",. apparantly,.
we're festivaling together in 3 weeks,. ooh 'eck

it's a 1.9d engine from a Caddy, do you think she should start
looking out for another donor?

pop could be a coolant hose dumping coolant over engine = smoke??

Hi

Our friend is fairly clued up, I'm sure she'd have noticed if it was a coolant hose - water all over the road under her bus would have been a clue

Kate's going to have a quick look in a bit.

To be honest, it's quite a smokey engine, so I'm wondering if her exhaust has come unattatched (?) allowing the smokey fumes up into the engine bay and from there inside the bus?

Although we have a diesel ourselves, I know very little about them and avoid looking our own engine, let alone anyone elses

Is it a turbo diesel engine as it sounds like what happens to my Fiat Scudo once a year. It blows a boost hose, only 2 different ones to go know but it goes with a real bang and then if you try and drive it you get stacks of black smoke coming out the exhaust as the engine will be overfuelling as its temporarily a normaly aspirated engine.

Obviously this does not help if its not a Turbo Diesel

Last one sounds likely, take a good look down around the turbo and compressor outlet hose... as its a 'conversion' highly likely some non-standard fitments have let go.

I had a similar thing and it was the timing pulley slipped off the woodruff (sp?) key throwing the timing out.

hello everyone thankyou

the garage man fixed it in the end, a glow plug had literally exploded!

it always sounded 'rough as f**k' & now sounds better
than ever, though still lots of white smoke (better than black anyway?)
she's a little (lot) worried about how that will fare in the upcoming
mot, is thereanything she can do to lessen the smoke a bit?

& also, her reverse lights are on as soon as she puts it in any gear,
the neighbours love her! for now she's taken the fuse out but anyone had any similar experience that they can help us point her in the right direction?

Would have been a good idea to replace all 4 go-plugs, esp. with whitre smoke symptons, though not a fun job...
Does she use the glo-plugs to start it or just turn the key?
White also possible water, wouldn't let her go too far without getting it diagnosed for sure.

Will check those detail with her asap. I did my glowplugs at the start of the year, perhaps when Ive finished pratting around with getting our Aircooled on the road I'll apply what I learned then and do the other 3 for her.
