T25 Crewcab gearbox rebuild

Post by Fitztiddley »

My Crwcab gearbox is kippered and needs a rebuild or replacement. Can any one suggest my best course of action? Anything near to Braintree in Essex is helpful.

Cheers, Neil.

I got my five speed rebuilt by a one man band in Hertfordshire for £450. As he was on a call out when I arrived to deliver it I left it with the firm next door. He called me to discuss the job and stated that he had difficulty in obtaining the four ball linear bearing in the selector mech. I spent some time on the web and located these at a firm called Bear transmissions in Solihul who apparently have them made. To be honest when I arrived to pick my refurbished gearbox up I was none too impressed by the untidy state of his workshop and did wonder what I had let myself into. He did show some of the parts he replaced and give a proper invoice and a one year 12,000 mile warranty for what that is worth and he seemed to know his stuff. In the event the gearbox is working correctly and I have no reason to doubt the workmanship. The solihull firm came over as a much more profesional set up and had I seen them first I would have been interested in a comparison quote. Also since then I have done business with Beaker (this forum) who also does transmissions. There are a number of repairers on the web and advertising in VW Camper & Bus. I am told that I got off light with my £450 and hope this will not bite me back in the fulness of time. My advice would be to do some research and eyeball the firm if posible. PM me for the phone numbers of the three firms I mentioned if you like. Good luck
