Whats that exhaust bracket ?
Hi all
Just fitted a new exhaust to the sync
but on the front pipe there was a trianglar sort of bracket.
What the hells that for?
Also below the silencer bracket there was what looked like another (rear) pipe holder. Is it important, as it had rusted away?

Presuming we're talking 2.1 exhaust here.
Triangular bit bolts onto the engine to provide more support for the exhaust.
The other bit clamps the pipe that runs across the back of the engine, again to support it.

We were missing a strap on the 2wd's silencer - God knows how long for - but I suspect it may have had a lagre part to play in the fact that over Christmas the silencer completely detached itself from the rest of the exhaust by rusting through - VW tend to put most things there for a reason........and Syncro's aren't usually sedately driven all the time......

"HEY, LOOK AT MY CAR"
I bid you farewell.......for now.......

Erm, that bracket is missing on mine
Although can't see where it would go if it did exist.
Do you mean the bracket shown here?
The exhaust I replaced on a 1.9 2wd had a very similar bracket (what I was thinking of when I said I would take a pic!) that bolted onto the engine in the centre, but there aren't any holes for you to do this on my 2.1 syncro.
Sorry for being completely useless.
Sam.

They should all have them, inc. 2WD, even the GSF exhausts have the bracket fitted to the pipework (which are really good quality and a good fit). People tend to leave the bracket off the engine when doing and engine swaps leaving no where for the flanged bracket on the exhaust to attch.
Basically you should have 2 small brackets that are attached with the crank case bolts.
They do rot off and do get left off when engine swaps are done. They do have a tendancy to corrode due to their position and there are loads kicking around quite happily without them.
BBB, thought yours was still intact?

Si, was before it came to you last time the n/s silencer strap had collapsed n the silencer was tilting down to n/s.
At around the same time the engine started playing magical tunes from the knuckle - silencer pipe
Nearly fixed it meself . ..well . .nearly . .brackets were wrong as it turned out.
Was using it as example of: don't fit all the brackets = something will break he he he
