They don't get that much better...
Is it a DJ or a MV?
If it's a DJ, s'probably coolant temp sender.
If it's a MV it could be the above or Lambda sensor, or a million and one other things but those are the common ones.

I honestly don't know how people afford to run one of those on petrol, I ran a 1.9 one once, it was arttrocious, it was set up right but to keep up with the flow you had to thrash it, and thashing it meant it did about 18mpg.
For 18mpg you could drive something cool fast, not a 2 tonne brick!

A really good one isn't thaaat bad!?!?

Think agree though with this one, first thing to look at for a 10mpg one is coolant sensor and wiring to it? Presuming the air filter is clean and it actaully has some compression on all 4 when hot?

You don't say how it starts and runs generally..

My 2.1 Digijet averaged 22MPG on my last 1,800 mile French trip with about half of that towing a boat and cruising up in the 70's. My 1600 Mondeo does about 36 MPG and wouln't do much less with the boat on the back if driven conservatively. You need to sort that out or you will have the eco police come to get you. You sure you haven't got a birds nest complete with chicks and poo in your air filter?
cheers

hated detected in that post? I just outlined that they aren't the most frugal items and I find it hard to comprehend that in this day and age people can warrant spending that amount of money on fuel.

Could be a 'calculation mishap' by a factor of 2, as 18 mpg seems to be nearer what ones driven fast get.
Then that's almost twice the 10 it's getting now... Mmm... another 2 x factor and if it was once doing 40, then that's not far short of 4.54545454..., the factor between litres and gallons :?

Hey, just guessing around here :)
but it sounds like its earnt itself a good service somewhere soon, 10 mpg engines won't be hiding their faults from a good service checkover, the words 'thumb sore out stick' comes to mind.

18-20 mpg on gas, 23-27 on petrol MV, syncro, one with power steering one with a boat on top but I drive like your grandad, and am so glad I went gas :D
MV needs good exhaust and lambda, DJ needs leak free intake, both need sensors good and true and connections good. Even in limp mode an MV will usually do better than 10 ime. Check over pressure on fuel regulator, good vacuum from plenum, I had a blocked take off on plenum and mega overfuel, smallest screwdriver cleaned out the crud and all good again.
