pug n/a engine

Post by leroy99 »

ive finally bit the bullet and bough a nearly finished conversion( 1.9 n/a pug diesel engine). the plan is to pull the engine and ancillaries from the donor van and put it in my 1981 2ltr cu van. my question is does anyone know if i can use my 2ltr 4 speed transmission out of my Aircooled van (this would be easier in terms of gear linkages etc..) but am unsure about the ratios of the box. the donor van came with a box attached to the engine but it is from a later van and would require extra work with gear linkages etc..

If you use the aircool 2ltr box it will be okay provided you fit a diesel bell housing and input shaft.An adaptor plate then mates up the bell housing to the pug engine. The gear change linkage rods from the 2ltr box need to be used.I run a 1.9n vw engine and the 2ltr ratios seem just right .

if its one of phills kits it will bolt to your old 2 liter petrol gearbox no mods!
did you buy the green one from flea bay?

theres quite alot of work involved in fitting a heater and radiator , so dont scrap the dnor van too quick.

you need to drop the fuel tank to remove the coolant pipes ,but if there metal dont bother buy some good used plastic ones.

it was indeed the green van, im going to use the box that the engine is already attached to and convert my van to hydraulic clutch as people say the cable clutch would give me arnie thighs, and also change the gear linkages to take the new box (DU), i thought the box on my van was a 2ltr, but the other night i climbed under the van and the box code was DH (1.6).
let the head ache begin
