vw were the first place i called, i was told i could buy individual gaskets for the carb, but not a complete kit, and that the didn't do ALL the bits to make a complete kit

You remember correctly Si ! The genuine kit covers VWs, Vauxhaul/GMs and probably a host of other slight variants.

i tried the place in the link posted by fritz, they do them £90, i have 2 kits from GSF there's not much in there for the money, certainly not a complete kit
i've yet to find a number for southern carbs to call them
looks like i might have to buy all the individual bits from VW

I've got them on the shelf, I just don't seem to be able to remember to put them on the webshop.
In all fairness they ain't amazing but Pierburg have washed their hands of carburettors and you have to take what you can get,
Mine are Italian ones that I've never managed to get the float valve to work but the rest of the kit is fine, and like I say, beggars can't be choosers.
There are 2 different kits, to do with the size of the accelerator pump push rod, long and short.
I'll try to get them up in the next week or so as I will have internet back at home soon.

I bought a carb rebuild kit recently from a company called Gower and Lee in Watford, there is a link on the wiki to them, about 37.00,genuine pierberg and comes with accellerator diaphram, there are 2 sizes of acc pump so you just need to remove and take a measurement.Gower and Lee also stock the other carb components, choke pull down etc.
