snapped accelerator cable?

After resolving the starting probs a couple of weeks ago, the van has been driving lovely. Unfortunately driving home tonight, the accelerator just gave way under my foot, so I am presuming the cable has snapped. Since it was a dark and winding lane just a mile from home, we have pushed her to a parking space and will investigate properly in the morning. :cry:

In the mean time, if it simply is the cable, how easy is this to replace? (Have done it before on a car) Are there any tricks/tips that would be helpful to know before we start on her?

If you have AA or RAC membership, use it! They carry complete cable repair kits or tend to...

The repair cables have been known to last, oooh 5-6+ years :whistle

Else purchase new one and fit yourself...

If you dion't get RAC to fix it (which is a cracking idea) it's not too bad to diy. First,get one from Just Campers for about £15 then get a thick blanket to lie on as you're gonna be lieing down for a couple of hours. Trickiest bit is disconnecting at the pedal end - it's a tiny little split-pin affair to undo at arms length whilst on your back,craning your head up holding a torch and some pliers! So,get a good light,something to rest your head on and if you can - remove front right wheel as it gives you so much more room to manouvre. BUT make sure you are using axle stands x2 for safety!
Once you've got front free tie a very long piece of srting to it so when you pull the whole cable out towards the back of van you will leave the exact route the new cable has to go! Make sure you grease the linkage where it attaches to pedal as you won't want to be going back up there for a while!

Preety easy to replace the cable. Took about half an hour by the time I'd set it right. Cost about £6 I think from JK.

I have the breakdown cover that comes with Adrian Flux insurance but haven't used them yet so not sure how they operate (guess they use local rescue services?) so will have to see if they can do it, if not, thanks for the walk-through, at least I have an idea of what I'll have to do if we *do* DIY!

ok, the recovery guy came with the intention of simply recovering me (I dont think he even had a tool box!). So..

... We have removed the snapped cable and pulled some string through for the re-installation. Got the replacement cable (from GSF) which actually comes with all the hosing etc which I think it's going to be easier to dispose of and use the existing stuff still in place. However, at some point the engine was changed for a golf (1.6d). Problem now is that the end bit of the cable at the engine bay has the wrong type/size of connector to fit the ball on the arm (is like a ball/socket combo, rather than plain ends like I think the petrol ones have).

Can anyone advise if there is a supplier of accelerator cables long enough to fit the van, but terminated to fit a golf engine - or where to get appropriate parts and find someone with a very heavy crimp tool?!! Otherwise its going to end up a right bodge!

(Also, since the recovery guy started it in reverse to move it, the starter has jammed - anyone reckon I can get them to cough up for a new one? :? )

the t25 and golf throttle linkage connections on the injection pump are both the same a plastic square with a hole in with a metal spring clip that slides over it to hold it on to the ball, sounds like gsf have sold you a petrol cable which is to short and has a plain end for a solderless type nipple. if your desperate to use the van get a electrical block connector loop the cable through the connector round the pump ball joint pull tight then tighten screws up i have done this before and it lasted a couple of years!!!

I'm going to put this on the WIKI does anyone know if its the same procedure for diesel and petrol.

Thanks for the suggestion about the electric block, we might have to resort to this!

Its definately a new diesel cable,
hopefully below is a picture of the old one (left) with the new (right).
The old one also has a small spring clip that held it on but obviously wont fit the new cable, so perhaps it is simply a new,larger spring clip I need?!

Adrian Flux do use local companies but mainly ones that tow you off to your destination (unless it is a campsite)
