AAZ out of donor car - but whats this? Photos......

Post by ringo »

Just spent the day getting the engine out of the donor car (took about 2 hours longer than it should - bloody drive shafts!) and put the AAZ on the bench.

I was wondering if peeps could perhaps give me a few pointers - i've not looked at turbo diesels before so im learning....

The turbo is covered in oil (and perhaps leaking) - is it fubarred? The donor car went like a rocket - so somethings working!

What is this ? Do i need to connect it?

In detail..

Im guessing this is the LDA...

replied on the yard , bottom pic is LDA - thats where the famous 1.6 boost pin goes ! Baxter sells em for good money and deffo worth it - mine went from zero to hero when it i did it , wakes the engine up AND improves fuel economy!

follow the linky on B-Y , or if ya lazy

http://www.vwdiesel.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=579

take the round metal plate off top ( 4 bolts , one on each corner) there is a rubber diaphragm with the pin bolted through it.
dead easy , takes 5 minutes , you cant "cock" it up , wakes the engine up no end and improved mpg .
i was getting a regular 40mpg and excellent acceleration , less down changes on hills etc.

That will be this then...

[img:500:375]http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3028/262 ... a16756.jpg[/img]

The 1.6td (from a passat apparently) in more detail...

[img:500:375]http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3057/262 ... 325218.jpg[/img]

The vwdiesel thread says:

8. Under this lid, you will find a rubber membrane with a stem of fixed above as well as a spring. REPLACE the stem and the diafragme of your 1.9td by those of the 1.6td. I advise you to place the stem of 1.6td with the cone decentred towards the momentary side of your car; in this way, you will begin your adjustments with the least aggressive profile (and less soot)

Im wondering what decentred towards the momentary side of your car means?

Is the same as the one Baxter sells? Im sure his doesnt look - decentered!

Thanks again

ok , my french/canadian to english translation is crap. will try and exlain so it makes sense......................

what you want to do is look down the hole that has now appeared after taking the pin/diaphragm out , look at the sidewall of the hole nearest the cambelt cover "decentred towards the momentary side of your car "?!?! .
you will see a small pin that might be sticking out(pop it back with a small screwdriver carefully if it is showing)

as pressure is applied to the diaphragm , the attached stem/boost pin is pushed down , the small pin sticking out of sidewall 'rides' on it , the further boost pin is puched down , further the pin poking out of sidewall sticks out (must be on a spring?). with me so far ?

with the standard pin , see it has straight sides ? well the more boost is applied (pressure via tube from manifold onto diaphragm) the pin out of side wall is always at same setting . with new 'angled' pin it comes out further, providing more fuel. therefore more boost=more/extra fuel internally - seperate to throttle.

get the tapered pin and have a good look at it , see it is tapered off centre ? depending on where you put it will dictate how far small pin comes out of sidewall of pump .

set new boost pin so that steepest angle/ramp is facing pin in sidewall(cam belt cover) - dont worry it wont smoke on you.

the ones Baxter sell are from a Rover 22otd etc , they have an even steeper ramp than VW ones. i got one from a scrappy and gave it to someone on B-Y - they love it!

if you think this is bollox wait til you ring me....................

Thats brilliant mate - it makes sense.

i will get on the blower tomorrow anyhow.

Now im wondering about the oil breather - and whether i need a catch tank.

I saw another post you did Elvis - think i may just do that.

I need to take a closer look at the JX manifolds tomorrow. There's quite a lot of difference....

Anyhow, my weeks holiday hasnt gone to plan - but im getting the AAZ sorted....

Cheers

WHS^ is wired to sender and will start up once engine has stopped if engine is above a certain temp and circulate water until temp drops again , then cut out.
yet to find anyone who has ever heard theirs working!

ELEC Water Pump and conversion

Post by nero253 »

Just had to say that the Water pump on my JX engine worked a treat, unfortunately the rest of the engine died when she tore her cam belt, she is now sitting up my local garage awaiting repair possible transplant to AAZ engine would be very interested to learn how yours goes, and be very grateful for any pointers.

Made some progress - not enough really - but im going to work some more today - i've got some issues.....

I wired the advance jobbie (whatever it is) onto the pump solenoid 12v permanently (better mpg apparently)...

[img:500:375]http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3270/263 ... 1cc3e5.jpg[/img]

Does anyone know what the sensor that belongs in this water connector? (shown is the AAZ connector that doesnt have a sensor in it - but the JX one does)

[img:500:375]http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3046/263 ... 67c617.jpg[/img]

I havent got one connected on my 1Y - and the JX connector is in a very sorry state - so i was going to leave the AAZ one on.

If i leave the connector dangling will anything go wrong?

Whats it for?

Thanks

will the JX one not come off and clean up ? its metal so shouldnt be too bad a state.copied and pasted this off another post of mine as im lazy!

thickest red - to first glow plug (nitcably heavier guage than others)
yellow/red - sender at 'front' of engine (side profile nearest gearbox) on water pipe - this is the guage sender

black/blue (i think it is but mine are all "pooh" , but it is the one connected to aux water pump anyway) goes to the other sender on same piece of pipe

red - sender just behind injector pump - this is the glow plug temp sender

yellow - sender on top of oil filter housing -high pressure warning sender

blue( or "pooh" blue/"pooh" green/maybe got a trace in it but dont think so) - low pressure oil sender - goes at front of engine just above the two water temp senders

black - fuel cut off solenoid (on injector pump!)

make sense ?

Its plastic and is in a right state - i dont think i will get a decent seal if i use it..

Interesting that you say its for the temp gauge sender - i removed the one off my van (the 1Y) and the gauge still works!

More questions arose today - will put up another post...

Thanks...
